Rehagel and his Boys, an observation · 2004-07-06

two days after the Greek did win the football European championship with their coach Otto Rehagel I come up with some observation. You may apology my being behind.

All through the tournament Greece has been the underdog and in the end Greece did win. Ok, it is a strong phenomenon that the neutral auditorium goes with the underdog. This is good ol' footy style. Well this time, in any of the games Greece had to go for there was always a great fraction with their opponents. How come?

I suggest, that the Greek team was the only team completely without stars, therefore the others had an advantage in marketing. All the other teams in the finals had guys like Figo, Beckham, Nedved, Baros(sorry, iso 8859-1), Gomez, Ronaldo, Henry, Zidane, Davids, v. Nistelrooy, etc. Players from top professional teams with top advertisement contracts. The audience all over Europe did know them already, including those who were supposed to be neutral. Since it is easier to be with someone you know already, the support for the underdog was smaller then it used to be. Correct me, but I think this is new to the European football championships and it is all marketing? What a sinister world this is ... driven by mediocre MBA's.

Another thing we learned is, that even if covering man rather then room might be an oldfashioned strategy, in combination with Tzatziki it is still dangerous, dangerous, dangerous ...
